Tabletop mosaics can add charm and color to a house. It is often difficult though, to find a table that is flat and even enough to hold a mosaic. Luckily, anyone can easily build a coffee table for mosaics with only a drill, wood glue, paint and some pieces from the local hardware store.
Pre-Fabricated Table Tops and Legs
Home stores carry a variety of fabricated table tops and legs. Some of these tables even come with pre-drilled holes for attaching legs. Leg holes can easily be drilled though, so any table top will do.
Choose a table top from a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Choose the best shape and size for the room in which the table will be placed. Also purchase four table legs. Make sure that all of the legs are the same length and that each comes with attached screws at the top and feet at the bottom.
The table will also have to be painted before assembling, so purchase a small amount of glossy paint. Use a roller to get the best application of paint on the table. Paint all of the table parts and allow to dry completely before assembling the table.
Build a Table to Mosaic
To assemble the table, flip the table top over so that the bottom side is exposed. The positioning of the legs will vary depending on the shape of the table. If the table top is round, simply make sure that the legs are spaced to form a square with equal distance between each of the legs. The legs should also come in at least an inch from the edge of the table. If the table is square or rectangular, just find the corner and measure in an inch from each side. Mark the spot for each leg with a Sharpie.
Next, find a drill bit that corresponds to the width or gauge of the screw on the top of the table legs. Use this drill bit to drill a hole on each of the marked areas. Be careful not to drill through the table, though that mistake can be corrected if needed. Try to keep the drill perpendicular to the table top so that each leg will stay straight.
Once each hole is drilled, screw in the legs. Before the legs are fully attached, add a little wood glue to add security. Allow the table to dry for a day before flipping it back to the upright position.
Making a Mosaic Table Top
Once the table is complete, any mosaic can be added to the top. Use small ceramic tiles, flattened marbles, stones, glass and found objects to create a unique design. Lay out the design on the table before securing it.
Once the design is laid out, use industrial-strength adhesive to glue down each piece. Allow the adhesive to dry overnight.
When the pieces are dry and secure, use a pre-mixed grout to fill in all of the spaces between the tiles. Spread on the grout with a plastic trowel and use a moist sponge to wipe up any excess. Use a moistened finger to smooth out the edges of the table.
Set the table aside and allow to dry overnight. Apply a grout sealer the next day to help strengthen the tabletop. Allow the sealer to dry for a day and then use the table as needed.
Custom Make Mosaic Furniture
A custom-made piece of mosaic furniture will help to add charm and individuality to any room. This project is so easy that anyone can build and mosaic their own table. Anyone would be proud of a functional and original work of art built practically from scratch. Take the time to make one of these tables, and create a piece that will provide years of use and beauty.
